Today cannabis can be consumed in a variety of ways including smoking, vaping, edibles, beverages, mists/sprays, and as an ingredient in food.
In general, prices for cannabis are declining. That's because overall the supply of cannabis is increasing faster than the use of cannabis (i.e., demand). When supply is greater than demand, prices typically come down.
There are about 18 million daily users of adult-use cannabis in the United States, more than the approximately 14 million that consume alcohol daily. Sales of adult use cannabis are expected to be over $50 billion annually within 5 years, growing from about $32 billion in 2023. As more states legalize, the number of daily cannabis users and revenue is likely to increase.
Cannabis and hemp are both called Cannabis Sativa in the plant community. The primary difference is the concentration of THC (the intoxicating cannabinoid in the plant). Hemp is defined by the Farm Bill of 2018 as cannabis with under 0.3% THC by dry weight; cannabis (aka marijuana) has a 0.3% or higher THC concentration.
Today, adult-use cannabis is not legal nationally. There are currently discussions about changing how cannabis is classified at the federal level, with one option being "rescheduling" it to be classified as a lower grade controlled substance, and another option is eliminating it entirely from being considered a controlled substance.
At the time this was written, adult-use cannabis is legal in 24 states in the US with more on the horizon. Some of the largest markrts that have already fully-legalized include California, Colorado and Michigan. PCM and Cannabis Coast to Coast have reporters across the country that often report on specifics in their states to help you stay up to date.
